John Oliver has taken full advantage of commercial-free television with his long take-downs of how things work in America. He made his return last night after three months away, proving how much he’s been missed.
During the latest episode of Last Week Tonight, Oliver went on a 17-minute rant about pharmaceutical companies and how they market to doctors. If you think drug commercials on TV are annoying, just look at how they market directly to your doctor. Indeed, Oliver pointed to a study that shows nine out of 10 of the big pharmaceutical companies spend more on marketing than research and development.
Watch the entire segment to see Oliver’s new commercial on how to spot if your doctor is taking money from the pharmaceutical companies.
Of course, Oliver has been sharing thoughts on holidays during his time off. In November, he pointed out how silly the Thanksgiving turkey pardon ceremony is. In December, he told us how “truly awful” New Year’s Eve is.
Other highlights from his first season include the Miss America take-down and his problems with the lottery.
