The Arizona Cardinals and star wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald are reportedly close to a new deal.
League sources have told ESPN, that the team and Fitzgerald are close to a getting a new multi-year deal done.
Sports Illustrated noted that while an official deal has not yet been finalized and terms have not been disclosed, the Cards are said to gain $13 million in salary cap space.
Re-signing Fitzgerald seemed to be a top priority for the Cardinals this offseason. His production on the field has declined some, but he is one of the best wide receivers to have played the game and a fan favorite in the desert.
The veteran is an 8-time Pro Bowl selection, the franchise’s all-time leader in receiving yards and touchdowns and by all accounts, a good guy off the field.
Fitzgerald has spent his entire career in Arizona and was the third pick in the 2004 draft. He will be 32 next season.
While he may no longer be the player he once was, it’s time to reward one of the league’s role models and allow him to finish his playing career with the Cardinals.
