Former North Carolina men's basketball coach Dean Smith passed away on Saturday night.

ESPN reports that Smith died "peacefully" in his North Carolina home surrounded by his wife and five children. The former coach of the Tar Heels had been dealing with a number of health problems over the years including memory loss.

Smith was the head basketball coach at the University of North Carolina from 1961-1997. Smith accomplished a lot in his coaching career, winning the National Championship in 1982 and 1993 while appearing in the Final Four 11 times. Smith also coached the 1976 men's Olympic team to a gold medal victory and retired with the most wins by a coach in men's Division I history at the time with 879.

According to the New York Daily News, Michael Jordan, a member of the 1982 National Championship team, was one of many to issue a statement about the passing of his former mentor.

“He was my mentor, my teacher, my second father,” Jordan said. “Coach was always there for me whenever I needed him and I loved him for it. In teaching me the game of basketball, he taught me about life.”

Smith was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1983.
