NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said he would be in support of changing the league's playoff system.
ESPN reports that Silver said he would consider eliminating playoff seeding in each conference and instead have the division winners and the teams with the best overall record from the rest of the field fill out the bracket.
"Ultimately we want to see your best teams in the playoffs. And there (currently) is an imbalance and a certain unfairness. ... A lot of owners have strong feelings on it, but I think it is an area where we need to make a change." Silver said.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the proposed change would benefit teams like the New Orleans Pelicans and the Oklahoma City Thunder who would currently be out of the playoffs in the western conference but would replace the Miami Heat and Charlotte Hornets as the last two seeds in the eastern conference.
Silver added that traveling may become an issue as teams from opposite sides of the country could potentially face each other in one of the first rounds of the playoffs. Silver also encouraged for there to be more discussions between himself and NBA owners about potential changes to the system.
