While Scarlett Johansson looked really uncomfortable when John Travolta kissed her on the Oscars red carpet Sunday, the actress defended her one-time co-star. She said there was nothing inappropriate about it, although her facial expression at the time certainly had everyone fooled.
Back on Sunday, Travolta had two really strange moments. First, photographers caught him trying to kiss Johansson on the check while standing behind her.
Then, he presented the Best Original Song Oscar with Idina Menzel, with the two sharing a nice joke about his infamous “Adele Nazim” flub from the 2014 Oscars. He kept touching Menzel’s face, which was apparently part of the rehearsed bit.
Travolta’s kiss with Johansson provided the Internet with plenty of fodder for memes, but Johansson wasn’t too happy with the attention it got.
“The image that is circulating is an unfortunate still-frame from a live-action encounter that was very sweet and totally welcome," Johansson told the Associated Press. "That still photo does not reflect what preceded and followed if you see the moment live. Yet another way we are misguided, misinformed and sensationalized by the 24-hour news cycle. I haven't seen John in some years and it is always a pleasure to be greeted by him."
It’s true that Johansson and Travolta have not worked together in a long time. They have only made one movie together, A Love song For Bobby Long, and that was back in 2004.
