As Jeremy's friends send the younger Gilbert away, Elena and Damon convince the principal to allow Jeremy to graduate.
Meanwhile, Matt receives a call from Enzo telling him to show Sarah Salvatore around and not to spill the beans on their arrangement of turning Sarah into a vampire.
Elsewhere at a cabin, Caroline and Stefan plan a surprise for Sheriff Forbes, who is on to the vampire buddies. However, the sheriff has important matters to attend with some unsolved cases. When Damon walks in on the sheriff's work, he jokingly says with each file thrown nonchalantly at the desk that each case was his doing.
Sheriff Forbes smiles endearingly before Damon sees the file on Elena and Jeremy's parents. Damon firmly denies any part in the accident.
Nonetheless, the sheriff plays the tape left by Miranda Gilbert, the matriarch of the family. On tape, Miranda says she wants to talk to the sheriff before the accident had occurred.
Speaking of the Gilberts, Elena and Jeremy bond over smoking a joint, but who knew it would have such a profound effect on their relationship?
When Elena leaves to the police station after an urgent call from Damon, Jeremy receives a surprising visit from Enzo, who threatens Matt over the phone with Jeremy's life on the balance.
Not only is Jeremy's life on the line, however, when Matt takes Sarah to the graffiti tunnels and Enzo blazes through it hitting Matt.
Back at the cabin, Caroline and Stefan finish up on setting up for Sheriff Forbes. Caroline tells Stefan he didn't have to be there for her just because her mom told him to look out for her after her mom passes away, but Stefan reveals that he's not doing it because of Caroline's mom; he's doing it because he wants to be there for her.
When Elena calls Damon to let him and Sheriff Forbes know that Jeremy had been smoking pot the night of the accident and that Miranda had caught them, it all makes sense about the urgent message left on the machine. So, the car accident that left the Gilbert parents dead was a normal accident.
After talking to Damon about being exceptionally ordinary, Sheriff Forbes falls asleep, but will she wake up to say goodbye to Caroline?
Even though audiences had assumed Jeremy was headed to art school, Alaric sends Jeremy off with leads to go after vampire attacks, but without Elena knowing, is Jeremy safe for the better?
