In an interview released this week by Just Jared, Tom Felton details how the results of his Pottormore.com quiz devastated him. He also admits how difficult his weight loss was for his newest film Against the Sun and discloses details about his current work on a fan documentary he's directing for BBC Three.
The actor, best known for his character Draco Malfoy, currently stars in the WWII film available to rent or buy on iTunes called Against the Sun, which also stars Garrett Dillahunt and Jake Abel. Both Felton and his co-stars were on strict, 500 calorie-a-day diets for the film and were basically living off almonds and broccoli stalks. The crew had to keep the craft services truck well away from the set so as not to tempt the stars.
The film chronicles the tale of a WWII pilot, bombardier, and radioman who find themselves adrift on a lifeboat without food or water after being forced to ditch their plane during a scouting mission, IMDB states on their website.
Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a critic score of 63% and The LA Times said Against the Sun is admirable but destined to be overshadowed as it resembles other major motion films like Unbroken and Life of Pi.
Felton is currently working on an upcoming fan documentary he is directing for BBC Three that takes a deeper look into the incredible fan base that supported the Harry Potter franchise. "It’s just kind of a chance for me to have a more in depth look at the world of super fans and these people that have followed franchises–kind of at the root of why Harry Potter was so successful," he explains.
Movies franchises like The Lord of the Rings, The Hunger Games, Twilight and now Fifty Shades of Grey have inspired almost cult-like fan frenzies. The documentary may help explain the mentality behind these mega-fans.
Felton interviewed his old costars, Rupert Grint and Daniel Radcliffe, for the documentary, as well as J.K. Rowling. Though he said it was an honor to have them speak candidly with him about their fans, the documentary wasn't actually meant to focus on Harry Potter, but rather the extraordinary efforts of fans in general.
During filming for the documentary, the crew pulled up Pottermore and had Felton take the sorting quiz. "I thought, you know what, let’s do this. In fact, I did try and answer the questions to try and get Slytherin as the answer. And I think the computer saw through my attempt to try." Ironically, he was sorted into Gryffindor and said he was both devastated and heartbroken. "I saw J.K. actually the next day and said there must be a glitch in the system. She guarantees me the Sorting Hat is never wrong," he says.
For those of you who don't know, Pottermore is a website focusing on the unknown parts of the Harry Potter series and re-telling the story in an interactive way. The site was designed by Sony in partnership with J.K. Rowling.
Felton took to Twitter after to express his distaste for the sorting hat's decision, The Celebrity Cafe reported.
J.K. Rowling, however, was not surprised by what the hat had to say:
Felton hopes to have the documentary premiere in April or May of this year.
