While many viewers on Twitter thought that Pharrell Williams belonged in Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel during the Grammys, actor Zach Braff made a more unfortunate comparison. He’s since apologized for comparing the Grammy winner to a monkey.
During the broadcast, Braff posted a picture of Williams in his bell boy outfit from Williams’ “Happy” performance next to an image of his Oz The Great and Powerful character. Braff voiced a monkey named Finley in the Disney film. “Someone just sent me this: #IWoreItBetter,” Braff wrote.
Since some thought that was racist, Braff deleted it and apologized. “I love Pharrell. I thought the outfit he wore was similar to that of my bell hop outfit in Oz. I apologize,” the former Scrubs star wrote.
Williams performed a new rendition of “Happy” while wearing a lobby boy outfit that looked similar to Zero’s outfit in The Grand Budapest Hotel. He won the Grammys for Best Pop Solo Performance for “Happy” and Best Urban Contemporary Album for GIRL.
As for Braff, he recently directed Wish I Was Here.
