File this one under heartwarming news of the day. A 4-year-old boy named Emmett Rychner, who formed an unlikely friendship with his 90-year-old veteran neighbor Erling Kindem, went to visit him for his birthday at his retirement community this past weekend.

The duo formed a friendship and bonded over Kindem teaching Rychner how to grow tomatoes and it grew into a strong bond. Their friendship became a viral sensation in the summer of 2014 and they have now reunited.

Their friendship hit a speed bump when the World War II veteran moved away from their neighboring homes in Farmington, Minnesota and moved to a retirement home with his wife and Emmett moved to a larger home for his expanding family, Kare11 reports.

Although Emmett visits his friend often, it isn’t the same as being next door, so he was thrilled when he was invited to Kindem’s 90th birthday party on Sunday.

Emmett came with a gift – matching dog tags that read “Emmett and Erling, friends forever.”
