On Monday, there were rumblings and on Tuesday, it will be official that San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis will retire.

ESPN noted that the team thanked Willis for his service since 2007 as a member of the Niners organization.

"On behalf of the entire San Francisco 49ers organization, my family, and our Faithful fans, I would like to thank Patrick for everything he has brought to this team and our community," 49ers CEO Jed York said in a statement. "Some of the greatest memories in the history of our franchise have come from his passion, dedication and sacrifice.”

It was reported a day earlier that Willis was likely retiring.

He joins fellow defensive player Justin Smith, who is also set to retire Tuesday, however, Smith’s retirement after the season was expected. At only 30, Willis’ was not. But, a nagging toe injury that required surgery and sidelined him last season may have been a factor in his decision-making.

He was drafted by the 49ers in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft and played for the team throughout his eight-year career. He was also named to the Pro Bowl every year that he was in the league except for last season when he was hurt.

Willis will be greatly missed on Niners’ defense. He ends his career with 950 tackles with 20.5 sacks.
