The Italian Supreme Court has overturned the murder conviction of American Amanda Knox in the 2007 murder of British student Meredith Kercher.
The highest court in Italy began hearing the case again this week, following a 2014 retrial that found both Knox and her former Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito guilty in the murder.
Knox was first sentenced to prison in 2009, but an appeal ended her sentence in 2011 and she returned to the U.S. Last year, she was sentenced to 25 years in prison, while Sollecito received 28 1/2 years, notes NBC News.
Kercher was found stabbed to death in the Italian apartment she shared with Knox while they studied abroad together. Prosecutors think that Kercher was killed during a sex game, but Knox and Sollecito said that they were together at another elsewhere at the time of the murder.
Knox currently lives in Seattle and got engaged to a musician in February.
