It looks like AMC had plans to create a spinoff of one of its other popular shows.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate television executive Sandra Stern revealed that the network wanted the writing staff of Mad Men to create ideas for a spinoff. The plan was to create a contemporary version of the show which is set in the 1960s at an advertising agency in New York City.
According to Huffington Post, Stern added that one of the ideas revolved around an older version of Sally Draper, the young daughter of the show's protagonist. The writers also considered giving Don Draper's protégé Peggy Olsen her own series.
"Sally was the one character young enough that you could see her 30 or 40 years later," Stern said. "There was a time we wanted a Peggy spinoff, too, and, a la Better Call Saul, a minor character going off to L.A."
Stern said the ideas never came to light because showrunner Matthew Weiner wasn't comfortable with making a spinoff. AMC has had success with Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul and has already ordered two seasons of a spinoff of The Walking Dead.
With no plans for a spinoff, fans of the series can look forward to saying goodbye to Don Draper for good when Mad Men returns for its final season on April 5.
