Just like comedians Louis C.K. and Marc Maron before him, Andrew Dice Clay gets in the TV game. He leads Showtime's upcoming comedy series Dice, which got a six-episode order.
Variety reveals the semi-autobiographical series has Dice playing himself in the new half-hour, single-camera series. Dice films in Las Vegas later this year.
“Love him or hate him, Dice is a true original, and Dice is always funny,” Gary Levine, Showtime’s exec VP of original programming, told Variety. “After a career full of ups and downs, he’s hotter today than ever. Plus, we were looking to do a semi-autobiographical comedy about a one-named icon and Cher was busy.”
Scot Armstrong (The Hangover Part II) is a writer, director and executive producer for Dice. Dice also executive produces alongside Bryan and Sean Furst, Richard Shepard and Bruce Rubenstein. Dice comes from Fox 21 TV Studios.
This wouldn't begin Dice's relationship with Showtime, as the station also hosted his special Andrew Dice Clay Presents the Blue Show, which airs April 25. Showtime also hosted Clay's 2012 special Indestructible. Dice airs sometime in 2016.
Despite a strong career in the '80s, Dice feel on hard times after lackluster films and sitcoms like UPN's Hitz and CBS's Bless This House. Dice follows the protagonist life in Vegas as he tries to save his career while balancing his obligations to his family, ex-wife and former finance.
Clay himself came into his own of late, starting with his appearance on the last season of Entourage in 2011, then touring in long stints in Vegas to his 2012 special, his first in years. He also starred in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine and appears in Martin Scorsese's untitled rock 'n' roll pilot.
