Cornerback Antonio Cromartie is returning to the New York Jets after agreeing to a deal with the team on Thursday. The deal comes one day after superstar corner Darrelle Revis also agreed to a deal to come back to the Jets.
According to the Associated Press, Cromartie’s deal is for four years and is worth $32 million. The deal can have a maximum value of $35 million. The Jets entered free agency more than $51 million under the salary cap. The contracts for the three cornerbacks they have signed in the last two days, Revis, Cromartie, and Buster Skrine total $127 million.
Revis and Cromartie were teammates on the Jets from 2010 to 2012. Revis reached out to Cromartie about returning to the Jets.
''I'm going to get in contact with him very soon here,'' Revis said Wednesday night. ‘‘And try to convince him to hopefully come back and join our Batman-and-Robin tandem we had a couple of years ago.''
Cromartie was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in He was traded to the Jets in 2010. Last March he signed a one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals. He had 53 tackles and four interceptions last year, according to ESPN. He helped lead the Cardinals to their first playoff appearance since 2009. Cromartie also went to the Pro Bowl for the fourth time in his career.
The Jets have been busy since free agency began on Tuesday. They have traded for wide receiver Brandon Marshall and quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, cut wide receiver Percy Harvin, signed guard James Carpenter, and re-signed running back Bilal Powell, guard Willie Colon, and long-snapper Tanner Purdum.
