The creators of the Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul have said that the show's characters have developed in ways they weren't expecting.
In an interview with HitFix, showrunner Peter Gould said that he and series creator Vince Gilligan were surprised by the direction certain characters have taken during the shows's first season. Gould attributed the development of the characters to the performance of the cast.
"The cast added such layers to these folks," Gould said. "We watched what the actors were doing as we shot the first few [episodes] and realized that some of our ideas of who these people were could be developed more."
Gould added that the final episodes of the season feature a number of twists and turns that came from their observations of who the characters really are. According to Uproxx, Gilligan said that Breaking Bad fan favorite Mike Ehrmantraut is a central piece to the show and will be going forward. Gilligan added that Jonathan Banks should win an Emmy for his performance in a recent episode revolving around the character.
Better Call Saul airs on Mondays on AMC at 10 p.m. ET.
