The Denver Nuggets have fired head coach Brian Shaw after going 20-39 so far this season and named his assistant Melvin Hunt, as interim coach.
ESPN noted that the team announced the news on Tuesday.
"I want to sincerely thank Brian for his time with our organization," said general manager Brian Connelly. "You won't find a better guy than Brian and he is one of the brightest basketball minds I've ever been around. Unfortunately things didn't go as we hoped, but we know with his basketball acumen that he has a very bright future ahead of him."
Shaw had not been shy about voicing his frustrations with players and therefore the writing was on the wall and his firing was inevitable.
The Denver Post reported last month that the head coach actually said he thought the team was intentionally losing games.
The situation went from bad to worse recently when players chanted a countdown to the season’s end while on the court. Shaw, however, disputed that’s what they were referring to. Either way the search is on now for a new coach.
The 48-year-old was with several teams during his playing career including the Miami Heat, Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers and two stints with the Boston Celtics to name a few. For his coaching career he was previously an assistant with the Lakers and Indiana Pacers.
