FX has renewed the acclaimed drama The Americans for a fourth season, even while it is still in the middle of season three. The hit show stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys.
The cable network announced today that the show will get another 13-episode season in 2016. It still has four episodes left to air in season three, with the season finale coming on April 22.
“It’s been a once in a lifetime opportunity to make a show like this with the immensely talented and immeasurably supportive team at FX and Fox 21 Television Studios,” producers Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields said in a statement. “We are blessed with an extraordinary cast and crew and grateful that we’ll all be able to continue telling this story that we love so much.”
The Americans tells the story of Phillip (Rhys) and Elizabeth (Russell) Jennings, who are two KGB spies living in Washington D.C. at the height of the Cold War. Noah Emmerich stars as their neighbor, who happens to be an FBI agent. Weisberg created the series.
Despite critical acclaim, the series has surprisingly only been nominated for three Emmys, two of which are for Margo Martindale’s guest performances. The third came in 2013 for Nathan Barr’s title music. It has done much better with the American Film Institute, which named it one of the top programs of the year in 2014 and 2015.
The next episode of The Americans airs on Wednesday at 10 p.m.
