Harper Lee is being investigated for an anonymous tip to authorities of possible elder abuse. It’s been claimed she’s been forced into publishing her highly-anticipated second book, a follow-up to To Kill a Mockingbird.
Plans to release her second novel, Go Set a Watchman, were revealed last month. This came as a surprise to fans, since Lee, 88, is notoriously media shy.
According to the New York Times Lee was interviewed by authorities in Alabama over allegations she’s publishing the second book against her will.
A source said there’s been no conclusion yet but she "appeared capable of understanding questions" and "provided cogent answers to investigators."
A doctor who she’s known for years but has not treated her was reportedly the one to make the call to the adult protective services hotline, asking the state investigate further. He believes her lawyer, publisher and literary agent might be taking advantage of her.
The Human Resources Department and the Alabama Securities Commission are working together on the case.
Just last week a journalist claimed to have received a handwritten statement from Lee when he inquired over whether or not she really wanted to release the new book, which read “Go away! Harper Lee.”
