Jake Gyllenhaal is a hot commodity in Hollywood right now. His most recent film, Nightcrawler, was nominated for an Oscar and his performance in Constellations on Broadway debuted to high praise.
He is also currently in post-production for three films and in the process of filming a fourth. Southpaw, Everest, and Demolition are all set to be released in 2015 and production of The Man Who Made It Snow will begin soon.
Gyllenhaal surprised fans and critics alike losing a startling 25 lbs to play the somewhat sociopathic nocturnal camera man Lou Bloom in Nightcrawler. He then turned around and gained 15 lbs of muscle to play a championship prizefighter alongside Rachel McAdams in the upcoming film Southpaw, which finally released it’s trailer today.
The film, directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by Kurt Sutter tells the story of Junior Middleweight Champion Billy “The Great” Hope (Gyllenhaal) a lefty champ who loses everything in a personal tragedy and is forced to fight his way to redemption.
Gyllenhaal’s back-to-back severe changes in physique seem to rival the dramatic weight fluctuations of Matthew McConaughey from Magic Mike to his Oscar-winning turn in Dallas Buyers Club and Emmy-nominated role in True Detective.
The film will premiere on July 31!
His other films have yet to release trailers, but their descriptions sound intriguing.
Based on a Black List script by Bryan Sipe, Demolition centers on an investment banker (Gyllenhaal) who finds himself in emotional turmoil after the death of his wife. He begins to rip apart his life to investigate where he went wrong, but then meets a single mom (Naomi Watts) who rescues him from his darkness, The Hollywood Reporter shared.
Everest is directed by Baltasar Kormakur (Contraband) and written by Mark Medoff (Children of a Lesser God) and Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours). The film follows a treacherous attempt to reach the summit of the world’s highest mountain, documenting the unbelievable journey of two different expeditions challenged beyond their limits by one of the fiercest snowstorms ever encountered by mankind. The climbers (Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, Jake Gyllenhaal & John Hawkes) face nearly impossible obstacles as a lifelong obsession becomes a struggle for survival. Universal is set to release the film on Sept 18, First Showing reports.
2015 is shaping up to be The Year of Jake Gyllenhaal.
