An art collection like no other is on the auction block today. The art was owned by the legendary Hollywood actress Lauren Bacall, who died in August.
Bonhams in New York announced in October that it will be auctioning off pieces from the collection Bacall accumulated over the years. The collection was valued at a combined $3 million.
“Everyone knows Lauren Bacall the famous actress,” Bonhams vice president Jon King told Vanity Fair on Monday. “But they don’t know her as the serious collector.”
There are some items that will surely interest the classic movie fan, like a game table used by Bacall’s first husband, Humphrey Bogart. There’s a lithograph of three hats that Bacall had hanging over her coat rack. King later found out that it was made by Henry Fonda, who signed the piece. Another painting was actually made by Noel Coward.
“Her collection is truly a reflection of her extraordinary taste and remarkable life,” King told CNN.
Other pieces include six bronze maquettes by British sculptor Henry Moore, who was close friends with Bacall and her favorite artist. There’s also jewelry and pieces of African art.
Most items from the 750-piece collection come from the New York apartment she shared with Jason Robards, her second husband. However, some items do come from the Los Angeles home she shared with Bogart.
Bacall died in August at 89.
