Madonna revealed in a new interview that she “felt incarcerated” during her seven-year marriage to film director Guy Ritchie. She also said the relationship hurt her creatively, too.
“I think when you get married you have to be willing to make a lot of compromises and that’s fair enough,” the singer told the U.K. Sun, reports E! News. “I think that’s the way it goes in relationships. However, you know, I did find myself sometimes in a state of conflict. There were many times when I wanted to express myself as an artist in ways that I don’t think my ex-husband felt comfortable with."
Later in the interview, Madonna explained that she feld “incarcerated” and “wasn’t really allowed to be myself” with Ritchie.
"It doesn’t mean that marriage is a bad thing,” she added. “But if you’re an artist you’ve got to find someone who accepts who you are and are comfortable with that."
Ritchie, who just finished directing The Man From U.N.C.L.E. for Warner Bros., and Madonna were married in 2000 and divorced in 2008. They are the parents of Rocco, 14.
Back in 2011, Ritchie called their marriage “a soap opera,” but said it was “definitely not something I regret.”
Madonna’s Rebel Heart was released last week.
