Former Houston Texans and Oakland Raiders quarterback Matt Schaub has found a new home and signed a deal with the Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday.
ESPN reported that the Ravens signed the veteran quarterback to be Joe Flacco’s backup this season. The deal is for one year and sources close to the situation have said that it is worth $3 million.
Schaub, 33, was released by the Raiders after just one season. Before that, he served as a backup to Michael Vick in Atlanta, but his best years and maybe his worst years came with the Texans.
Statistically speaking, the quarterback had some good numbers in Houston.
In 2009, while with the team, he led the league in passing and was voted to the Pro Bowl, notes Pro-Football-Reference.com. He made the Pro Bowl again in 2012, but the next year things got very messy and he was eventually traded to Oakland for a sixth-round pick.
For Baltimore, Schaub is the most competent backup to Flacco since the days of Marc Bulger. Moreover, Schaub’s former coach Gary Kubiak was the offensive coordinator for the Ravens last year and despite leaving for the Denver Broncos, his system will still be used in Baltimore. Therefore, should Flacco go down, Schaub may be able to easily step in and have some success.
