Yet another British comedy is being brought to American television, and Michael Chiklis and Cheryl Hines have just been cast in two of the lead roles.
According to Deadline, Michael Chiklis and Cheryl Hines have been cast in Cuckoo, the NBC comedy pilot based on the hit BBC Three comedy series which starred Andy Samberg.
In Cuckoo, a daughter returns from a summer abroad to her middle-class family having married an eccentric man named Cuckoo. This role was played by Andy Samberg in the original series, but here will be played by YouTube personality Flula Borg. Chiklis will play Ken, the girl's father, and Hines will star as the mother.
Some of the creative team of the original show is on board for this remake, as writers Robin French and Kieron Quirke wrote the American version. Tim Long, who has had experience writing for The Simpsons, will be showrunner for the series.
Michael Chiklis is known mostly for his role as Vic Mackey on The Sheild. He also recently starred in American Horror Story: Freak Show. Cheryl Hines has starred on some TV comedies like Suburgatory and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
After losing a lot of their biggest comedies like The Office and Parks and Recreation, NBC has been pretty low on comedy lately, completely abandoning their Thursday night comedy lineup. Cuckoo is another comedy pilot NBC has in production, and hopefully they might be able to return to the Thursday night success they had a few years ago. Also in the works at NBC are Mr. Robinson, starring Craig Robinson as a music teacher, as well as Superstore starring America Ferrera. The network also recently premiered their new series One Big Happy.
With shows like Cuckoo, will NBC be able to repeat the success of previous decades of comedy? Or are the days of NBC comedy domination long behind them?
