We already know what Daredevil looks like in Marvel and Netflix’s new series, but now we finally know how Vincent D'Onofrio is going to look as his nemesis, the gangster Kingpin.
D’Onofrio, who is best known for his roles in Full Metal Jacket and Law & Order: Criminal Intent, was picked for the role in June 2014. He looks like the perfect fit for the part of Wilson Fisk, who is also known as Kingpin. The character was played by Michael Clarke Duncan in the 2003 Ben Affleck movie.
In an interview with USA Today, D’Onofrio said that he did his best to capture the character by studying the comics. He gained 30 pounds for the role and shaved his head.
"I just brought in this kind of character who in one sentence could easily go from being a child to a monster, depending on where his emotions take him,” the actor said.
He later added, “I wanted him to have an appearance of being super-powerful so that when he throws a punch, it's a major punch...There's a lot of weight behind it.”
Still, executive producer Steven DeKnight (Spartacus) said that he did ask D’Onofrio to add some nuance to the character that wasn’t in the books. “Here is an actor who's really thinking about it on not only a character depth but a visual depth that I really loved,” DeKnight said.
Daredevil stars Charlie Cox in the title role, along with Deborah Ann Woll and Rosario Dawson. All 13 episodes of the series will be available on Netflix on April 10.
