Nintendo is at an important crossroads in the company’s history. Now that it has finally decided to begin developing mobile versions of its popular games, there was a rumor that Nintendo might finally embrace showbusiness again with a Legend of Zelda Netflix series. Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata commented on the rumor in an interview last week.

Last month, the Wall Street Journal published a report that Netflix and Nintendo were talking about a Zelda series. It would be the first time Nintendo would tackle a movie or TV series since the infamous 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie.

However, Iwata told Time Magazine that the report is inaccurate.

“As of now, I have nothing new to share with you in regard to the use of our IPs for any TV shows or films, but I can at least confirm that the article in question is not based on correct information,” Iwata said.

So it sounds like if there will actually be a Zelda live-action series, Nintendo isn’t ready to announce it at this time.

Iwata covered a wide range of other subjects in his Time interview, but the main focus was on Nintendo’s move to developing games for smartphones and tablets. He said that he hopes that the sense of community players get from the company’s classic games will live on with the mobile games. He wants to bridge generations together through video games.

“One thing that we have found over the years is that video games themselves have a tendency to be difficult to break out of a particular segment,” Iwata told Time. “But what we have found with some of our most successful products, is that they tend to be ones where people are playing them together and the communication is spreading much more broadly and easily than standard word of mouth communication.”
