The New England Patriots will reportedly not pick up Darrelle Revis’ option, meaning that the cornerback will become a free agent on Tuesday.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the news. While it means that the Patriots will have to offer Revis a new contract to bring him back to Foxborough, it doesn’t mean that he definitely won’t be back. Schefter reports that the Patriots do plan on continuing talks with him.

Revis signed with the Patriots for two seasons for $32 million, but played the 2014 season for $12 million. That made the option for the second year worth $20 million. According to Boston.com, if the Patriots did pick up the option, they would have taken a $25 million cap hit.

The New York Jets are expected to make a big offer to bring Revis back. He played for the Jets from 2007 to 2012, playing in only two games in his last season. After a year in Tampa Bay, he signed with the Patriots and helped the team win Super Bowl XLIX.

Overnight, the Patriots re-signed safety Devin McCourty for five years, $47.5 million.
