Prosecutors working the murder trial against the former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez are close to resting their case, the judge said Wednesday.
ESPN noted that Bristol Superior Court Judge E. Susan Garsh, who is presiding over the trial, has said that the prosecution could wrap up its case in about a week.
Also on Wednesday, Garsh ruled that jurors will hear some jailhouse phone calls made by Hernandez to his fiancée Shayanna Jenkins and old college teammate and current Miami Dolphins player Mike Pouncey.
Prosecutors, however, could choose not to use the calls between Hernandez and Pouncey.
The Boston Globe reported that the defense argued the calls their client made to Jenkins were “irrelevant and prejudicial,” but the state countered that they revealed some evidence of a coverup.
The former NFL star is accused of murdering semi-professional football player Odin Lloyd in June 2013. The victim’s body was found in an industrial park about a mile away from the athlete’s North Attleboro home. He had been shot to death.
Hernandez has plead not guilty to the murder.
