Don’t expect Sean Penn to apologize for his green card joke about Birdman director Alejandro G. Inarritu from the Oscars last month.

Before Penn announced the winner for Best Picture, he said of the director “Who gave this son of a bitch a green card?” which stunned the audience. Afterwards, Inarritu said he thought it was “hilarious.”

Penn now says he has “absolutely no apologies” for it, condemning anyone who doesn’t see the “irony” on the joke, Fox News reports.

"I'm always surprised by flagrant stupidity. I keep having more hope," he also said.
"The fact is that I understand it. I see it all the time. When somebody sees the opportunity to frame something in the comfort that it will be common that they can do that and they can get a group to look at them and that they will take on those positions and never really think about what it was.”

Penn, who worked with Inarritu on 2001’s 21 Grams and has remained close friends with him, also said “Thank god” we have “great filmmakers like Alejandro working in this country.”
