Former True Blood star, Stephen Moyer, is opening up for the first time about his addiction to alcohol. He’s been sober for 14 years.

Moyer is involved in the CLARE Foundation and spoke on their behalf in Santa Monica on Friday. He’s never talked about being sober, but notes how everyone in his community is aware of it.

"As my wife said this morning, there isn't a restaurant in Venice or Santa Monica where I would be offered the wine menu," he said, The Hollywood Reporter reports.

"The Diet Coke, which is the patron saint of drinks for alcoholics, gets put before me before anyone even asks what we're drinking,” he continued.

He explained how he developed his addiction, saying being a stage actor in England, he was always chasing a high.

"There's this rush that happens from doing our job, this whirring buzz, and you want to continue that buzz,” he said. "Self-loathing motivates the desire to get loaded in the first place, and post-sobriety, there is the shame of admitting all of your faults," he added. "It's about education. And it's about getting rid of that shame."

Moyer and his wife, Anna Paquin, have 3-year-old twins Charlie and Poppy. He moved to Los Angeles eight years ago for HBO’s True Blood, which ended in 2014.
