A spine surgeon who happened to be golfing at the Venice, California golf course where Harrison Ford crashed his plane Thursday afternoon described the scene on Friday. He said he knew instantly that it was the world-famous actor.
Ford was piloting a vintage World War II plane and was the only one in the vehicle. The 72-year-old later underwent surgery. His son, Ben Ford, tweeted that his father was “battered, but OK” and his rep said that he is “expected to make a full recovery.”
It was reported that two doctors happened to be at the golf course at the time of the accident and one of them was spine surgeon Sanjay Khurana, who spoke with ABC News.
“He was stunned a bit. He was moaning and in pain,” Khurana said.
“You don't go golfing expecting to see an airplane crash and to help extract someone and realize it's someone you know from the movies, right? It's fairly bizarre,” Khurana told ABC News. ““But as a surgeon, I've been practicing for almost over a decade now, you deal with urgent situations. So you have to do your best for someone in distress.”
An eyewitness also said today that Ford actually saved lives by avoiding a residential area and crashing on the golf course.
Ford crashed just after reporting engine trouble and was hoping to return to the Santa Monica Municipal Airport, the NTSB said. The actor recently filmed the new Star Wars movie, which opens in December.
