March 14 is National Pi Day! Now, to clear up any confusion, there is also a National Pie Day. What’s the difference? Well, we all know what pie is, but maybe you forgot about pi. It’s that pesky number you had to remember in order to find the circumference of a circle: 3.1415926 and so on, infinitely. Most people remember it as 3.14, but there are competitions for reciting it, and even a web page that lists one million of its digits!

So why is March 14 National Pi Day? Because it’s 3/14, of course. However, there is something very special about it this year. Abbreviating the year with the last two digits makes the number 3/14/15, or the first five digits of the number. If you want to go even further than that, then you can celebrate it, at exactly 9:26. That way you get the first seven digits: 3/14/15 9:26, something of which I’m sure Leonard and Sheldon (The Big Bang Theory) would approve!

Does your head hurt yet? Then, don’t worry about the mathematical significance of the day, and just enjoy some delicious pie. Just because it’s Pi Day instead of Pie Day doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a good slice or two. In honor of National Pi Day, TheCelebrityCafe.com has once again created a top ten list of some of the best pies. Use the list to get ideas for what to buy or bake, and enjoy. Also, if you have a favorite that we didn’t include, share yours with us in the comment section below, and remember, as mentioned in last year’s list, not all pies are desserts (e.g. Shepard’s Pie and Chicken Pot Pie).
