The Walking Dead companion series doesn’t even have a title yet, but it already has a second season. Yes, AMC has so much confidence in Robert Kirkman’s new project that they have renewed it before the pilot has even aired.
AMC announced that the series will air this summer, starting with a six-episode first season. Then, it will be back for another season in 2016.
“We feel empowered by this two-season commitment, a serious show of faith from our network partner AMC,” Kirkman, who wrote the original Walking Dead comics series, said in a statement. “I personally take it as a sign that they believe, like we do, that we've accomplished our goal of developing something original that can pay tribute to the original show and expand the world I created while at the same time having something new to say with this story. I’m very grateful that we now have the opportunity to tell this amazing story and show the fans that we really haven't scratched the surface yet when it comes to The Walking Dead.”
The new series is about the same zombie apocalypse that struck Rick and his group in Atlanta, but will be about an entirely different set of characters and location. It will be set in Los Angeles and stars Cliff Curtis (Gang Related), Frank Dillane, Alycia Debnam Carey and Kim Dickens.
AMC loves to give creators extra breathing room for new shows. For example, Better Call Saul was picked up for two season and that has worked out well.
As for the main Walking Dead series, ti airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. You can check out our recap of the latest episode here.
