In an interview at SXSW, Robert Kirkman, accompanied by Executive Producer David Alpert, addressed the show’s eventual end.
Walking Dead author Robert Kirkman said: "One day The Walking Dead will end," according to a chat with USA Today at SXSW. No need to panic, folks. Kirkman also shared that “It’s a long arc.” Kirkman asserts that he and executive producer David Alpert “know the story” and have an end in mind. In the fall of 2013, Kirkman had told Rolling Stone that he had just finished writing the comic book’s end but said he could do 1,000 issues.
Also, The Walking Dead universe is expanding with the addition of a spin-off set to kick off with six episodes in the summer. As previously reported, the new show stars Cliff Curtis (Gang Related) leading his own rag-tag group of survivors through zombie-infested Los Angeles. It has already been greenlit for a second season. "We're going to be focusing a little bit earlier," added Kirkman. The episodes will take place earlier than the first episode of The Walking Dead and moments of the original will be reflected in the spin-off.
Kirkman will also helm a new action-oriented The Walking Dead video game (The previous one by Telltale Games was an episodic interactive drama and was more focused on character development than action) in the works as well as the adaptation of his comic Outcast for Cinemax TV. Outcast follows Kyle Barnes, a man plagued by demonic possession, and his quest for answers alongside a priest.
