Ty Herndon believes coming out in November has helped show the vulnerability in his music. He is now the first to openly sing a love song about another man in country music.
While speaking at the Family Equality Council’s Los Angeles Awards Dinner this past weekend, he talked about being “very proud” of this.
Herndon, 52, came out in an interview with People, declaring he’s “an out, proud and happy gay man.” He also revealed he’s been in a relationship with his partner Matt Collum for five years.
They made their first public appearance together in December at the 2014 TrevorLIVE event.
“I may be the first man in country music to sing a love song to another man. And I’m very proud to do that,” he said at the Beverly Hills event on Saturday, People reports. “I’m not changing the he’s for she’s. It’s straight on who I love. Love is universal.”
He added, “I’m keeping it unisex, but there are a few songs that I’ve written that I wrote about my own life. That’s the one thing about country music you got to sing what you know.”
Herndon follows in the footsteps of other openly gay country artists like Billy Gilman and Chely Wright.
