Whoever makes decisions at NBC needs to either be fired or have their brains examined. After signing an overall deal with Tina Fey, the network unbelievably passed on her first post-30 Rock series. But, just like the title character, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt could not be broken and found a home on Netflix.
The entire first season of the series, which Fey co-created with 30 Rock writer Robert Carlock, went live on Netflix this morning. Considering that Netflix has already put in an order for a second season, the streaming service must be very confident about it. After watching the pilot, it’s obvious that their confidence was not misplaced.
Ellie Kemper (The Office, Bridesmaids) finally gets the breakout role her bubbly personality deserves. She stars as Kimmy, who was a member of the cult that lived in a bomb shelter, under the assumption that the world had ended and they were the only survivors. Suddenly, they are rescued and become the stars of a local news report that goes viral as an autotuned song.
Kimmy and the three other women she was stuck with are nicknamed the Indiana Mole Women (a name they understandably don’t like) and are taken to New York for a Today Show interview with Matt Lauer. While the other women (Sara Chase, Lauren Adams and Sol Miranda) head back to Indiana, Kimmy decides that she can’t stand the idea of going back.
So, she stays in New York and cut to a hilarious montage of her trying to learn what life is like in 2015. During her “learning montage,” she runs into a little boy stealing a candy bar. When she decides to scold him, he yells, “Stranger danger!” She tells him, she’s a “Stranger Danger Ranger.” Yup, Fey hasn’t lost anything in the time since 30 Rock ended.
Kimmy finds an apartment listed in a newspaper and responds to the ad. It turns out that the landlord Lillian (Carol Kane) is looking for a roommate for Titus (Tituss Burgess, who you should recognize as D’Fwan from 30 Rock), but Titus didn’t know. Titus owes months of unpaid rent, but still doesn’t want to be near Kimmy. When Kimmy offers up some money from her Mole Women Fund, his eyes light up and he lets her stay.
Titus is another genius Fey/Carlock creation. He’s “a wonderful French roll... but black,” as Lillian describes him. Titus is from Mississippi and works as a fake Iron Man in Times Square because his dreams of starring in The Lion King never worked out. He is also completely self-obsessed. “I envy you,” he tells Kimmy. “I’ve never been able to meet me!”
The pilot also introduces us to Jacqueline Voorhes (Jane Krakowski). Jacqueline is a socialite with no sense of reality, which is similar to Krakowski’s 30 Rock role as an actress with no sense of reality. However, Jacqueline is a bit more sympathetic. It turns out that she’s the mom of the kid Kimmy saw stealing candy. When Kimmy sees Buckley (Tanner Flood) trying to steal again, she returns him to Jacqueline, who hires Kimmy to babysit.
Like most pilots, there’s a chance for Kimmy to go back to her old life in Indiana. After a night partying with Titus, while wearing a backpack and light-up shoes, she has her backpack stolen and loses all of her money. Titus tells her that she might not be cut out for New York, since, “Escaping is not the same as making it.” But just before she steps on a bus, she remembers that she’s unbreakable and stays.
Kimmy Schmidt, so far anyway, is another brilliant sitcom from Fey. Just remember, NBC aired Bad Judge, but passed on this. That’s the kind of world we live in.
Note: While all episodes of the first season are up, we will be doing recaps of each episode individually. Check back for our recap of Episode 2!
