Zayn Malik is breaking his silence on leaving One Direction after his legions of fans have taken to social media to say how heartbroken they are over it. He even revealed he’s working on solo music.

He announced on Wednesday he was quitting the band after five years, saying he just wanted a more “normal” life. Fans have been going crazy on social media, which likely prompted Malik’s interview.

In an interview with The Sun, he admitted the past few days have been hectic, but he’s “never felt more in control in my life.”

He also said he stayed in the band longer than he should have for he fans’ sake.

“I'm only upset I feel like I may have let them down in some sort of way,” he explained. “That's the main thing that I don't want to happen," he said. "It's not that I've turned my back on them or anything, it's just that I just can't do that anymore because it's not real to me."

He even dismissed rumors of tension between his former bandmates and confirmed his fiancé, Perrie Edwards, is “supportive.”

He’s now making music with producer Naughty Boy.
