Sam Johnson, wife of actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, wasn't very excited about her directing work on Fifty Shades of Grey. Johnson turned down the opportunity to direct the sequel Fifty Shades Darker.
In a interview with Marie Claire magazine, Aaron Taylor-Johnson explained that after reading the novels himself, he realized that he wouldn't have been a good fit to play the lead in the film and that despite his wife not being excited about the film at first, she really made it her own project.
"I'm obviously really, really proud of Sam and it was great to see her take that project and make it her own," explained Taylor-Johnson. He also added that he would have been too young for the role of Christian Grey anyway.
The reason behind Johnson not returning for the sequels has not been made public but the rumors were that Johnson and author E.L James did not have the same creative vision for the movie and fought while on set.
Johnson released a statement about her departure from the film that read, “I forged close and lasting relationships with the cast, producers and crew and most especially Dakota and Jamie. While I will not be returning to direct the sequels, I wish nothing but success to whoever takes on the exciting challenges of films two and three.”
Aaron Taylor-Johnson can be seen next on the big screen playing Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
