Sunday night at the MTV Movie Awards, Bradley Cooper won the coveted golden popcorn for Best Male Performance for his role in American Sniper. Although the win was quite the honor, Cooper’s speech meant even more as he dedicated it to his real-life character inspiration, Chris Kyle.

American Sniper, Chris Kyle, was murdered in February 2013. Cooper had the honor of capturing the essence of this man in the Oscar-nominated war film. “The responsibility to play a human being when his family is still alive and it’s still fresh was a huge endeavor and something that I new was going to be important. I treated it in a way I hadn’t before,” Cooper said, according to Huffington Post.

Standing on the movie awards stage, Cooper with his regrown classic luscious locks looked into the audience and said, “I want to thank MTV and the fans. It’s because of you that we have brought awareness for what the men and women in the military do everyday for us. Chris Kyle would have been 41 this week. Chris, this is for you.”

Cooper’s latest film project, Serena, involves what seems to be his favorite coworker, Jennifer Lawrence. The film was released in the US to limited theaters on March 27, Variety confirmed.
