Veteran news anchor, Bob Schieffer, has announced his retirement after five decades as a journalist.
The Face the Nation anchor confirmed his retirement plans during a speech at Texas Christian University Wednesday night, telling the crowd he’s “one of the luckiest people in the world” to have been able to spend his life doing what he loves to do.
He explained he has decided to retire at this time because, “I am so proud of where CBS News is now. Like any large organization, we've had our ups and down. We're on a high right now,” citing the success of programs like CBS This Morning.
He also said he wanted to make the announcement at his alma mater because it’s “where it all started for me.” He revealed he will be stepping down from Face the Nation this summer.
New York Times reports David Rhodes, president of CBS News, wrote in an email to staff members of Schieffer, “He’s been an inspiration and a mentor to so many colleagues — and frankly, to me.”
Schieffer’s work on CBS over 50 years includes 23 years hosting The CBS Evening News.
