Of all the strange things that can’t get pushed through Congress, you would think that taking parental rights from rapists would not be one of them. But, much to the chagrin of Daily Show correspondent Samantha Bee, that is the case.

In a segment that aired back on Wednesday, Bee discovered that rapists still have a legal right to fight for custody of the children they have with their victims. She interviewed Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who once tried to introduce legislation to change that, but her bill never even a hearing. Apparently, the $5 million annual cost that came with it was too much for the government.

Each time Bee heard more horrible things about the issue, she just couldn’t take it. At one point, she tried to quit the segment, but another member of the Daily Show team had to bring her back to finish. She wound up discovering that Florida of all places has already passed a law. She ended the segment with a list of other states that still have no laws on the books preventing rapists from having parental rights.
