Dave Chappelle disappointed fans at a Detroit performance on Thursday, leading to many asking for refunds and complaining on Twitter. His rep admitted that it didn’t go so well, but it doesn’t appear that the refunds will be granted.
In video from the 9:30 p.m. Detroit Fillmore show obtained by TMZ, the comedian can be seen sitting. Rather than telling jokes, the audience is heard yelling in disappointment. He sat smoking and slurred his speech.
“Let’s hear some of the act,” someone yells.
"Well sir, it's a little late for that. Right now I've gotta get off the stage because it's 2:00 in the morning,” Chappelle replies. Then, the audience yells that it’s only 1 a.m.
After the show, some complained on social media that it was a waste of money, especially considering that tickers ran from $50 to $240. But a Fillmore spokesman told TMZ that they aren’t responsible for a show’s content, so there won’t be any refunds.
“Out of the 50 shows on the tour, Thursday was definitely not his best set On the flip side, the incident inspired some additional sharp-witted material and (Friday) he came back with a vengeance,” Chappelle’s rep told TMZ.
The Daily News notes that some Twitter users blamed the audience for the terrible show. “I just watched Dave Chappelle be verbally harassed for an hour and a half by a disgustingly drunk Detroit crowd. He couldn't get a word in,” Jake Blankenship tweeted.
Chappelle is currently touring the U.S. and reportedly taped a comedy special.
