David Letterman reportedly heard crickets when he attempted a sexist joke when warming up his Late Show audience on Monday.
While taking questions from the studio audience before the show, Letterman was asked if he had any advice for those graduating college this year.
“Treat a lady like a wh–e, and a wh–e like a lady,” he reportedly replied, sources told Page Six. Stunned by what some would consider a sexist joke, his audience fell quiet.
Letterman reportedly tried to recover by giving a different answer of being kind to everyone and "eat a lot of salad.”
A different source claimed it “got a big laugh,” so there are conflicting reports out there. His rep said they “can’t confirm the accuracy” of the story.
As we previously reported, Letterman’s final guests include stars like George Clooney, Robert Downey Jr, Bill Murray, Oprah Winfrey and Julia Roberts. Stephen Colbert will take over the Late Show after Letterman bows out on May 20.
