Duke freshman forward Justise Winslow announced on Tuesday that he’s entering the NBA draft.
The decision comes less than one week after freshman teammate Jahlil Okafor announced that he’s entering the NBA draft. Winslow becomes the seventh Duke player to leave for the NBA after just one year and the fifth since 2011, according to the Associated Press. He joins Okafor, Kyrie Irving, Austin Rivers, and Jabari Parker among the players that left after one year. Guard Tyus Jones is another player that could go pro after his freshman year.
"This year at Duke University, my dreams and aspirations have literally come true," Winslow said in a statement, USA Today noted. "The friendships and relationships I've formed with those a part of the Duke and Durham community have been even better than winning the National Championship. With that being said, my family and I have decided that I should declare for the NBA draft this year. Considering the success and growth that I have experienced over this past year as a player and as a person, I believe it is time to take the next step on my career path and play at the highest level."
Winslow went to Duke as one of the nation’s top recruits. This past season he averaged 12.5 points and 6.5 rebounds and shot 42 percent from beyond the arc, according to ESPN. He ranked third in team scoring and second in rebounding. He helped Duke to a 35-4 record and a national championship, its fifth national title since 1991.
Winslow could be a top five pick. He is also considered to be a high lottery pick.
