Gwyneth Paltrow is getting backlash for the challenge she’s taking on to raise awareness for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, but a spokesperson for SNAP is coming to her defense.

Paltrow vowed to take on the #FoodBankNYCChallenge and live off of food stamps for one week.

Families part of the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program live off of $29, so that’s what Paltrow agreed to do.

She was criticized on social media after posting a photo of what she bought for that amount of money, but a spokesperson for the food bank told TheWrap Paltrow should be “commended” for her efforts.

“She has raised awareness of a very serious issue across our country,” said Silvia Davi, the chief marketing and communications officer for Food Bank for New York City.

Davi continued, “What Gwyneth has done is highlight this critical issue. Forty seven million people are living on food stamps. Of those people, 1.7 million live in New York City… She should be praised to walk in the shoes of those New Yorkers.”
