CNN correspondent Jake Tapper has been promoted to host of the network’s Sunday morning political talk show State of the Union.
The news was announced this morning with a video that included clips of Tapper’s biggest interviews during his CNN tenure. At the end, it notes that he will taking over the show in June.
Tapper currently hosts CNN’s weekday afternoon show The Lead, but he does have experience hosting a Sunday morning show. He had a stint as interim host of ABC’s This Week in 2010. He has been with CNN since 2013.
"I couldn't be more excited about this election season and the new platform I will have at CNN to cover it," Tapper said. “State Of The Union has a rich tradition and I hope to not only build on its history but expand the definition of what a Sunday show can be."
Candy Crowley previously hosted State of the Union until she left in December. Since then, CNN has had a rotation of guest hosts fill in.
“I am thrilled that Jake will take on this additional role at such a pivotal time in the election cycle,” CNN Worldwide CEO Jeff Zucker added in a statement.”He has the perfect combination of skills that make him uniquely qualified -- he's a relentless reporter, a gifted storyteller, and a terrific interviewer who doesn't stop until he gets answers. We are lucky to have him on both The Lead and State of the Union.”
Just like late night, the Sunday morning talk shows are experiencing a major shift towards younger anchors. CBS’ Bob Schieffer is retiring from Face the Nation and will be replaced by John Dickerson in June. David Gregory was also replaced by Chuck Todd on NBC’s Meet The Press. ABC’s This Week is currently hosted by George Stephanopoulos.
