Jane The Virgin opens with young Jane getting ready to go to church on Easter. While at the services, her logical mind makes her think about how it could be impossible for someone to be resurrected. She goes to her abuela and asks Alba about it. Alba gently tells her to have faith, which can remove her doubts, and to trust her heart. In the present, Jane is in a birthing class with Rafael, but then he leaves to take a call for work, leaving her alone while she sees a vision of herself on her shoulder saying this is what her life will be.

Jane and Rafael talk after the class and he apologizes since he had promised to turn off the phone. He was talking to a man named Graham, who could help him with the liquor license and he is looking forward to Easter dinner with Jane’s family. She gets ready to meet her other grandmother, Rogelio’s mother. At the house, Xiomara is getting everything ready off of Rogelio’s “excessive list,” which includes displaying pictures of his mother. Jane is sure her mom can win the woman’s heart back and we find out that his mother walked in on Xiomara and Rogelio together and she ended up being so shocked, she tripped on a lamp cord and her cat was electrocuted.

Jane and Xiomara meet Liliana de la Vega, who is excited to meet her granddaughter. She is terse with Xiomara and takes some digs at her, including how living with Rogelio is an “upgrade” from her previous home. Jane reminds her mom that Liliana is only there for a week.

Xiomara later tells her mother and Jane that she can’t deal with things, especially since Liliana had insulted her singing career. Alba tells her daughter to just turn her cheek and Jane tells her to take slow breaths, like she learned in childbirth class. Xiomara asks how it went and Jane ignores the urge to talk about her feelings to tell her mom it went fine.

In the end, Jane decides to talk to someone about her issues and turns to Andie (bad idea.) When Andie finds out she is having doubts about her future with Rafael, she assures Jane it could be hormones and said her sister also had some freak outs but then was fine once the baby came. Jane also brought up in this conversation that she and Michael had wanted the same things.

Jane is at work when she gets a text from Rafael. He can’t make dinner and she is upset when a rude customer makes a remark about her pregnancy and being on her phone. Jane defends herself and asks the woman to treat her like a person. The woman claims she can get her fired and Jane replies, “I’d like to see you try.” Later, Jane meets up with Rafael to tell him about what happened when Graham Falco comes up and hears her say she met the “worst human being in the world.” Things get worse when Jane discovers his wife, Alexis Falco, is the rude costumer. When Alexis sees Jane, she leaves.

Jane apologizes to Rafael and he knows she had just made a mistake and will try to fix it. Later, he is in his office when he gets an e-mail from a private investigator he had hired to find his mother. Petra comes in to tell him Aaron is leaving in a few days and she wants to call the police. Rafael told her they had dinner and he doesn’t feel it is Roman.

Alba is finishing an exercise class and talking to Edward, the man she is crushing on. After he leaves, she gets in Jane’s car when she hears her honk. Jane asks about a hint her grandmother was going to give him about a new restaurant, but he apparently didn’t take the bait. Later, they get ready for Easter dinner with Xiomara when Jane gets a call from Rafael that he talked to Graham about having an Easter church service and brunch to smooth things over with Alexis Falco.

Jane tells Rogelio and Liliana about what is going on and Liliana tells her it is important to put her man first. Xiomara and Alba come in and Liliana tells Xiomara to get Rogelio a water. Jane goes with her to remind her to behave and that even if she isn’t at the house, she will know whether Xiomara was on her best behavior.

Petra stands outside of Aaron’s room and calls him to see if he wants to have lunch. He is leaving at that moment and offers to do dinner. She agrees and then goes into his room. She sneaks around and finds some items, but then hears Aaron coming back so she hides in the closet. Once he leaves after finding his wallet, Petra leaves the closet and makes a phone call asking someone to meet her before she picks up the wine glass.

Michael comes to the hotel and sees Jane. She notices he is wearing a sweater that he often wears on dates. When he tells her he is meeting his ex Andie, she is stunned and asks where the date is, hoping it is a coincidence. She is surprised to discover it is the same one Andie mentioned and that she knew they had broken up. Before she can talk to him, Rafael comes to pick her up.

In the car outside the church, Rafael tells Jane about the private investigator and that he had an e-mail address for his mom. Jane is surprised and he tells her he was worried about e-mailing her and not getting a response. She thinks it would be better than not knowing and brings up not knowing her father at a young age. Rafael had been thinking of her when making the decision and tells her he had sent the e-mail. They go up to go into the church and Jane sees Edward is the priest.

Xiomara and Alba talk about Liliana and Alba tells Xiomara to apologize for what happened years earlier. Her daughter agrees as long as she will ask Edward out, so Alba relents. Xiomara apologizes for what happened and Liliana says she can forgive her for what happened to her cat, but not telling Rogelio about her pregnancy. Alba and Xiomara are surprised because she had told him.

Later, Xiomara confronts Rogelio, who tells her he had been trying to keep an image with his mother. He assures her he will tell her and then makes a bad joke about doing so on her deathbed. Then he tells her that he will admit the truth the day after Easter.

Jane goes up to Alexis, who invites her to join her friends for lunch. She begins to apologize for what happened, but the woman mocks her and brings up the liquor license, wondering if she was really apologizing because she was sorry or so she could help Rafael.

Petra gives the wine glass to Michael, who assures her if the fingerprints glass matches Roman’s, they will move to apprehend him.

Jane sits down with Alexis and her friends, who begin to discuss the arts. They ask Jane for her opinion. She is able to effortlessly slide into the conversation, much to Mrs. Falco’s chagrin. The narrator flashes back to the fact that Jane had done her homework on what to talk about. But Alexis appears to be very irritated, which may not be so good for her.

Liliana is sitting with Xiomara and Rogelio, who admits to her he had wanted Xiomara to get an abortion. His mother is disappointed in him once she learns the truth.

Jane walks into a room as Graham and Alexis are talking, just in time to hear that he is having an affair. As he leaves, Alexis sees Jane and asks if she heard. Jane admits she heard all of it and Alexis offers to help Rafael if she won’t say a word. Jane assures her she never would have anyway and Alexis apologizes for how harsh she was to Jane, although she does point out the knife she was using was dirty.

Later, Liliana tries to apologize to Xiomara, who assures her she doesn’t need to. But she still points out they should end the relationship since neither had thought of long term plans, such as children. She tells Xiomara she is getting older, which angers her and causes her to leave. Rogelio is mad at his mother, who tells him that she had been right about his previous marriages and didn’t want to see him go through another.

At the hotel, Jane sees Rogelio turn his phone back on, which disappoints her. He tells her he just wants to work to provide for them and she worries he will be gone often like his father. He tells her he is not like his father and while she knows that, she just wants him. Things are still tense as she leaves to go home.

Xiomara is having wine and trying to forget about Rogelio when her ex-boyfriend, Marco, comes to say hello and is surprised to see her in the neighborhood. She tells him about moving in with Rogelio and he wonders why she is by herself.

At home, Alba tells Jane that she asked Edward out, only to find out from Jane that he is a priest. She then reveals he said yes to the date.

Marco and Xiomara are talking and he tells her he would never have let anyone talk to her like Liliana did. Xiomara gets caught up in the moment and kisses him. Realizing what she did, she quickly leaves.

Alba and Jane talk about Rafael and her worries. Her grandmother tells her she needs to have faith and not to let the doubts get her. Xiomara comes home and surprises Jane when she tells her the same. She tells her daughter that she can’t always look at things with doubts because then things will end and she reminds her of what happened with Michael. Jane tells them she had been falling for Rafael and Alba tells her to remember what she liked about him then. When her doubts begin to get a hold of her, Jane brushes them away.

Rafael is sitting at the bar and lets his bartender know their hearing got pushed up, so they should have their license back soon. A woman comes into the hotel and says his name. It’s his mom.

Rafael talks to his mother, who shocks him when he finds out she lives only three hours away and when things fell apart with his father, she was offered millions of dollars to leave but she didn’t take Rafael. He finds out she remarried and he has a half-brother, but he is deeply hurt and gets up to leave.

Xiomara goes to tell Rogelio about the kiss, but then he surprises her by telling her he took his mother to the airport and that he did not like her disrespecting her since he loves her. He admits his love to her and Xiomara responds without admitting what happened.

Petra is on the phone with Michael, asking about the fingerprints since she is having dinner with Aaron soon. He assures her things are almost in place as Jane comes by. She is about to tell him about Andie, but then he talks about how great his date is and how he is moving on. She decides to keep things to herself.

Petra gets into the elevator with Roman, who tells her he made reservations elsewhere. She doesn’t have a signal on her phone and we see Michael trying to call her because Aaron is Roman. In the car, Roman tells Petra he knows she knows and we discover he had seen her hair through the closet door.

Jane goes to see Rafael, who is still reeling from what he found out. He tells her he wants to provide for his child like his dad did and he doesn’t feel like he is able to do anything without being a disappointment. He tells her they should focus on being parents rather than forcing their relationship, causing Jane to realize he is breaking up with her. She leaves and as she enters the hallway, Jane breaks down sobbing.
