Jennifer Lopez’s green Versace dress she wore to the Grammys in 2000 has definitely secured a special place in pop culture history, but it’s now been revealed it also spurred the start of Google Images.
Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt revealed with many viewers at home were searching for photos of the dress online, the company realized they had a market for people viewing photos.
He wrote in an article for Project Syndicate that co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin wanted Google to evolve and thanks to Lopez, they were given that opportunity.
“They started with images. After all, people wanted more than just text. This first became apparent after the 2000 Grammy Awards, where Jennifer Lopez wore a green dress that, well, caught the world’s attention," Schmidt wrote.
“At the time, it was the most popular search query we had ever seen. But we had no surefire way of getting users exactly what they wanted: J¬Lo wearing that dress. Google Image Search was born,” he continued.
Fans got nostalgic last year when Lopez recreated the dress as a performance outfit during her free Bronx homecoming concert.
