Justin Bieber didn’t record a song in response to Selena Gomez’s “The Heart Wants What It Wants” but he did admit he drew inspiration from their failed relationship for his new music.

Gomez released “The Heart Wants What It Wants” in November and openly talked about Bieber being the subject of the song.

While on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show, Bieber said he hasn’t responded with his own song directly but did write about the “heartbreak” he experienced when they split.

“I think a lot of my inspiration comes from [Selena]," he said, Us Weekly reports. "It was a long relationship that created heartbreak and created happiness and a lot of different emotions that I wanted to write about. There’s a lot of that on this album."

Bieber said he’s happy exploring his options right now, explaining “I’m single right now and I do enjoy it." He said in a recent interview that he’s “not looking” for a girlfriend right now but what he would want in a partner is someone he “can trust, who I can lean on. This business is hard, and I want someone I can confide in.”
