Actress LisaRaye McCoy said during a radio interview that if Taylor Swift was black, she would have trouble singing constantly about her relationships. She also said that a sex tape would ruin a black woman’s career.
While on Houston’s 97.9 The Box this week, McCoy was very open about her sometimes controversial private life, which included her recent divorce from Michael Misick, the former Premier of Turks & Caicos. Now, she has “much thicker skin” and can keep herself away from tabloids and social media.
“Now you kind of have to remove yourself a little more,” she told hosts J Mac and Madd Hatta, notes The Huffington Post. “And I like the people that are unapologetically them.”
This got the Single Ladies star thinking about the differences between the public perception of white women and black women. “Because we have different sides, ‘them’ and ‘us.’ And when it’s ‘them,’ they could do whatever they want to do and it’s like you could date five or six guys. Like Taylor Swift,” she said. “We know that she has went through a lot of people at her young age.”
While Swift has been praised for being open about her relationships, McCoy said she is sure that a black singer would not be praised in the same way.
“[Taylor Swift] sings about it all the time. Let that be a black girl and that’s a problem. Let somebody do a sex tape that’s a black girl and her career is ruined,” she said.
McCoy added that a black woman wouldn’t be able to turn that into a fashion career or reality series.
“So if we know this, to me that’s why we have to brand ourselves differently now,” McCoy believes.
