John Ridley is going to continue his association with Disney. The Oscar-winning writer of 12 Years A Slave has been hired by Marvel to work on a mysterious TV project.
The news was first reported by Entertainment Weekly, which reports that he has been picked to reinvent a Marvel character that already exists for an ABC series. However, no one is saying what character Ridley will work on.
The deal was also reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
In July 2014, Ridley signed an overall deal with ABC and the first project he developed for the network is American Crime. The anthology series is currently in its first season and will probably get a second season, which will focus on a different story.
The writer is also working on MGM’s Ben-Hur remake, which is set to hit theaters next year.
Marvel is up to three current shows on TV - ABC’s Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter, and Netflix’s Daredevil. There was news last week that another SHIELD spinoff is in the works, but it’s not clear if Ridley’s project has anything to do with that.
The studio is also developing A.K.A. Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders for Netflix.
